Nach USB 2.0 und 3.0 wurde im Jahr 2011 offiziell die Thunderbolt-Schnittstelle vorgestellt. Die von Intel und Apple entwickelte Schnittstelle, bietet eine theoretische Transferrate von bis zu 1.250 MB/s und ist dadurch schneller als USB 3.0.
Unteranderem könnten Solid State Drive Speichermedien von Thunderbolt profitieren, da es durch diese Verbindung keine Limitierung gibt.
Doch erneut wird die USB Technik verbessert. Die Spezifikationen der USB 3.1-Schnittstelle wurde inzwischen verabschiedet. Diese Schnittstelle ermöglicht eine maximale Transferrate von bis zu 1.250 MB/s und verringert somit den Vorsprung der Thunderbolt-Schnittstelle.
Allerdings werden USB 3.1-Geräte erst Ende 2014 oder Anfang 2015 erwartet.
Inzwischen wird bereits an der zweiten Thunderbolt Version gearbeitet. Angeblich soll diese eine Transferrate von 2.500 MB/s erlauben und soll im kommenden Jahr eingeführt werden. Die Thunderbolt-Technologie wird allerdings auch weiterentwickelt.
